Moreton-in-Marsh

Moreton-in-Marsh

Situated to the north of the region, Moreton-in-Marsh is one of the few Costwold towns to have its own railway station with a direct mainline service to London. Being essentially a market town, there’s a diverse selection of shops and restaurants but very few High Street names making it a delight for those who love to mooch around on the quest for something different.

The town is on the roman Fosse Way and was a popular coaching stop before the arrival of the railway. There is still evidence of this aspect of the town’s history with details of tolls charged shown in the town centre. It was granted a market charter in 1227 and a market with over 100 stalls is still held each Tuesday. In the mid-19th Century a market market hall, the Redesdale Hall was added, constructed by the local lord of the manor and 1st Baron of Redesdale, resident at nearby Batsford House, probably more famous for his granddaughters, The Mitford sisters.
