The Slaughters (that is Lower Slaughter and Upper Slaughter) are two delightful villages just a few miles from Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the Water. About a kilometre apart, the 2 villages epitomise the Cotswolds appeal.
The river meanders along the main thoroughfare of the villages, passing honey stoned cottages and quiet footpaths – possibly one of the most tranquil and attractive scenes in the region. These are considered the prettiest villages in the area and there are several walks taking in one or both of them.
Both villages were mentioned in The Domesday book which records the presence of a mill in Lower Slaughter and you can visit the mill which has been on the same site since the 14th century, now converted into a small museum, gift shop and tea rooms. There’s a country inn on the banks of the River Eye and Upper Slaughter houses a very fine hotel and the 12th century church of St Peter as well as some breath taking properties.
